I hope everyone’s week is off to a good start.
This week saw Amazon Prime Air make its first drone delivery; reports raised how IS are using ‘cheap’ commercial drones not only for surveillance but also as weapons; the US Commission on Enhancing National Security released its report to the President for Securing and Growing the National Economy; and, Perth announced that next month it will trial its first drones for shark patrols. Also in Perth, Qantas this week announced that 17 hour non-stop Perth- London flights will become available in 2018.
On the money front, there has reportedly been an increase in card-not-present fraud in Australia. It’s worth noting the merchant ultimately bears this risk. NAB has some guidelines for mitigating risk in card-not-present transactions, including watching for email-only correspondence, unusually high orders, and Western Union transfer requests; and, Bendigo Bank also has some more among their general merchant security guidelines such as never processing transactions on behalf of another business; as does RBS, adding increasing the level of detail required to be provided by customers to verify cardholder identity; and Barclays, including becoming PCI-DSS compliant.
On life, love and the universe, for lovers of beer, the craft has just taken up AI in the data-driven search for the perfect recipe based on customer feedback; and, in the UK three–person babies have reportedly been approved.
Congratulations to Stephen Dummett, who among many achievements last year organised some 150 of the Toowoomba community to come together to communicate and collaborate on #DisruptingCyberCrime, where we returned post CyberInnovation Tour, with the Toowoomba IT Network Steve chairs, ACS, Fuji Xerox, OTrain, held at UQ. Steve this week received the clearly well-earned, Regional Innovation Heroes award. Congratulations Steve.
Finally, some pictures from this past week’s powerful experience, with the Sunshine Coast Innovation Community coming together for the final workshop as part of the consultation process for the Regional Innovation Hubs funding.
Until our next #PeriodicWrap
